Plot and themes[edit]

The Croaking is a fantasy action romance set in a fictional world of hybrid bird-humans that follows the characters of Scra Eldwode and Ky Cedoc as they navigate the politics of a prestigious military academy, The Roost.[6] It is a Young Adult coming of age story that has the characters pursuing the mystery of a possible super weapon hidden in their world called The Croaking.[3] The comic is built around themes of racial prejudice, classism, and societal hierarchy as the characters must deal with the prejudices that come with their differing avian species.[6]

The plot begins with Scra Eldwode, a crow, and Ky Cedoc, an osprey, meeting on a cliff outside a city and developing a rapport over the summer that is abruptly ended when Scra stops showing up to their meeting place.[3] After Ky begins his semester at the prestigious military academy, The Roost, he finds that Scra is his roommate.[7] It's the school's first time allowing a crow into their ranks, and Scra's enrollment hints at a mystery that Ky and several other cadets begin to uncover.[3] They stumble onto Scra's mission to determine the nature of a possible super weapon named the Croaking, and are entangled in the effort to discover more about it.[6] They pursue this mission while dealing with the cutthroat nature of The Roost and the often violent prejudices held against crows and other species deemed unfit for combat.[3]

Major characters[edit]

The following characters are central to plot lines in the comic and make regular appearances:

  • Ky Cedoc is the protagonist of the story and a transfer student to the prestigious military academy, The Roost. He forms a relationship with Scra before his semester begins, and is surprised to find him as his roommate when he moves in. Although he's wary of his suspicious roommate, he seems to not hold the prejudices against crows that the rest of the school share. His empathy leads to him becoming a part of Scra's clandestine mission, and he finds himself forming possible romantic feelings for him. Ky is portrayed as outgoing, honest, empathetic, and naive.[3]
  • Scra Eldwode is the secondary lead of the story and the catalyst for The Roost's initial inquiry into The Croaking. He is brooding and closed off after a life time of suffering because of his species, but is shown opening up to Ky as he begins to trust him. He is admitted into the academy to be used as a spy for the military into the actions of the crow gangs, the Murders, that populate the city. He is determined to do what it takes to survive and carve out a better life for himself. He is portrayed as brooding, quiet, and dangerous but soft when he feels he can let his guard down.[3]
  • Ree is the first friend Ky makes at The Roost and a fellow outcast because of her species. She's portrayed as ambitious and talented but held back due to society's opinions about the kestrel species. She is aware of the limitations forced on her and is often concerned that her aptitude will not be enough to rise above them.
  • Neekia is Scra's childhood best friend and a fellow crow who grew up living on the streets with him. They are family to each other, but Neekia recently left Scra to join a crow gang for protection from the dangers of the city. She is portrayed as stubborn, loyal, and a survivor at all costs.
  • Reamer is one of the eagles at The Roost and a prestigious member of the student body with vast military connections and privileges. His mother is the director of the school and he shares parts of her control. He is portrayed as arrogant, dangerous, talented, and prejudiced against other species.
