"The DVD" is the first episode of the British-American animated sitcom The Amazing World of Gumball. The episode was written by series creator Ben Bocquelet, Jon Foster, and James Lamont. The episode premiered on Cartoon Network on May 3, 2011[1][2] and received 2.12 million viewers in the U.S.[3]
Plot[edit]
12-year-old Gumball Watterson (Logan Parker Grove) is instructed by his mother, Nicole (Teresa Gallagher) to return a DVD rental. He retrieves it from his brother, Darwin (Kwesi Boakye), who was using the disc to cut pizza. Gumball attempts to clean the disc with a sponge, inadvertently scratching it with the coarse side. The shock makes him drop the DVD into the waste disposal, destroying it.
Gumball and Darwin avoid telling Nicole by attempting to return a fake cardboard replica to the video store, as well as begging and cosmetic testing to raise the alternate twenty-five dollar fee. All of these fail, and Nicole senses their shortcomings over the phone, leaving early from work. Before she makes it home, the boys record an amateur recreation of the movie rental using a video camera, and burn it onto a DVD.
Nicole grows furious when she arrives, chasing Gumball and Darwin through the neighbourhood. After losing her, they arrive at the video store and give employee Larry (Kerry Shale) their homemade disc, in a final attempt to avoid facing Nicole. Larry sees through the facade. Nicole soon finds the boys at the store, where Larry asks her for the twenty-five dollar fee, along with seven-hundred dollars of late fees. She takes the boys and runs out of the building without paying.
