The Darkside Games
Introduction
The Darkside Games is an online gaming community founded in 2014, mainly operating on the military simulator, ArmA 3, developed by Bohemia Interactive. The server has had many staff and a large and always changing player base, largely influenced by the developer's actions and ArmA 3 map changes.
Altis Life (Game mode)
The server uses the Altis Life game mode, where players can choose to undertake a rebel life, or use their time working up the police ranks. The rebels are often fighting against police officers for control of areas such as police checkpoints, or to gain access to prohibited areas, usually to earn money upon successful completion.
Tanoa Map
When the Tanoa Map was released, as a part of the ArmA 3: Apex DLC, the server player base showed great interest in the map, as it was an exciting new change for ArmA 3 players, who were used to dry, barren landscapes like in the original Altis Life map, Altis (modelled off of Greek island, Lemnos). While the server experienced a great server population increase in the first few months, players became bored of the treacherous nature of the map, and experienced players found it hard to get used to the new environment, which caused a drop in server population, and some say almost killed the player base.
Staff Cheating & Negative Behaviour
In 2018, the server management was exposed by ex-players for using unfair combat tactics on the game server, such as weapons without recoil and ESP scripts. While the server management denies the allegations, evidence suggests the unfair behaviour did occur over a number of months or years, with ex-staff even claiming they witnessed it first-hand. In the aftermath of the scandal, images surfaced of owner Huntah's messages with an ex-player, showing threats and abuse thrown at the player, as well as the other server owner, Scorpiox, making his Steam account completely private after an image in his screenshot uploads was used against staff in the ordeal. Lynxaa, a server admin, was also caught by the server's former developer, Luke, utilising known ArmA 3 game glitches to his advantage whilst in combat. When asked about his behaviour, he said "I've done it for years", and that he has utilised the glitch since the release of ArmA 3.
These allegations caused a major disturbance in the Darkside community, as many people thought it was ridiculous that the staff were using glitches and scripts that, if used by a normal player, would almost certainly result in an instant ban.
