The Dream Manufactory is a French association loi de 1901 founded and managed by Henri Ballester-Colonna, with the aim of promoting the films and series he directs.
Purpose[edit]
The Dream Manufactory's goal is to present and promote films "entirely written, directed, acted and edited by passionate teens", according to its official presentation video[1].
History[edit]
Henri Ballester-Colonna, who has been passionate about cinema since the age of 10, created the YouTube channel "The Dream Manufactory" on April 23, 2017[2]. He has already directed several short films, notably with the children of the Saint-Vincent-de-Barbeyrargues leisure center, as part of the film workshops he himself runs (see Rizvolution).
The name of the collective is the English translation of the expression "dream factory" often used to talk about Hollywood. According to Henri Ballester-Colonna, "each film [...] is a little dream that comes true"[3].
The use of "manufactory" instead of "factory" - which would be the correct English - is intended to orient the French translation towards the French word "manufacture" which makes us think, in a second sense, of a handcrafted manufacture, that is to say a company of human productions. Indeed, the word manufacture comes from the medieval Latin manu factura which means "work by hand".
Organization[edit]
The Dream Manufactory's YouTube channel is created by Henri Ballester-Colonna, screenwriter, director, cinematographer, actor and film editor, on April 23, 2017[2]. The email address to join the collective is directly linked to this young director. All members of The Dream Manufactory participate in the development of film creations, whether at the pre-production, shooting or post-production level.
To join the collective, an application by e-mail or by private message on Instagram is required. Actors are recruited through a demanding casting process that is committed to fair play, but against any discrimination.
From one artistic project to another, it is very frequent that old members are replaced by new ones.
Activity[edit]
Based in Saint-Vincent-de-Barbeyrargues (the founder's home village), in France, The Dream Manufactory is present on many networks, both physical (friendships...) and virtual (YouTube and an official website, but also Instagram[4]).
