The Earrings (Kyrgyz: Свет-аке, Svet-Ake) is a 2010 Kyrgyz drama film directed by Nargiza Mamatkulova. It centers around the respectable Kyrgyz tradition of marriage and the use of earrings, instead of rings, as the symbol of engagement.
Plot[edit | edit source]
The short film little dialogue but a surplus of metaphors that center around tradition, childhood, marriage, and family.
A girl reaches a marriageable age and is visited by her mom's friend also escourted by her son. They mom and her friend leave the girl and boy alone to fix up the house. They are both shy and extremely timid. By the end, the boy departs and leaves her his earrings, in hopes that she decides to marry him.
