The Fine Bas
The Fine Bas are an English rock band from Birmingham formed in 2017 consisting of lead guitarist and singer Fin Gaylord, drummer Olly Daniels, bassist Harry Matthews and backing vocalist Louis Stokes. The band are best known for popularising the ‘gay rock’ genre due to new rock music not being popularised or released, Daniels said in an interview. They are ranked 75th on Rolling Stone’s list of 100 Greatest Rock Bands of All Time.
First album
In March 2017, the band released their first studio album, The Fine Bas 1: Gaylords, which featured one of their most famous songs, Never Mind The Gaylords, which would lead to the album going quadruple platinum, and ever since, the band have been nominated for Best Rock Band With First Album Gone Quadruple Platinum. The album led to the gay rock genre to be popularised, with drummer Olly Daniels stating in an interview “This year, no rock music or any cool rock bands have popularised anything and they didn’t release any cool rock. That’s why we decided to popularise a rock genre that would be cool and not controversial. Even though it didn’t end up controversial, there’s some unseen evidence of it being kind of homophobic”. While guitarist and lead singer Fin Gaylord told the interviewer “We were ready to popularise it, but we didn’t know what to do at the start. If we hadn’t done it then we wouldn’t be really famous. If we hadn’t been famous, nobody would know who we are.”
Later years
The band released three more albums, but bassist Harry Matthews left the band temporarily in March 2019 to pursue a career in football, but told the band he would return after finishing a final tournament. In 2020, the band would run into more trouble when the Coronavirus outbreak began. They stopped touring and recording studio albums and postponed the shows they were set to play that year. Fin Gaylord stated they were set to play live at the Flints bar in Mere Green, but the manager sold the bar soon after the outbreak. The band wrote on Twitter that they would play a few gigs in 2021, but if the pandemic was still there, they wouldn’t.
