The album received positive or mixed reviews from music critics, with most noting a growing evolution from the sound of their first album The Horror. Sputnik Music wrote: "If The Formulas of Death is nothing else, it is at the very least an album that shows a band with a ton of potential." While also mentioning that "Regardless of the fact that they nailed the atmosphere and gave this album a truly unique "evil death psyche" feeling that has so far eluded many of these retro chemists, most of the music is kind of boring".[4] xFiruath from metalunderground.com wrote "No matter how you end up listening though, just be sure to listen, as this is one of the most improved albums over a previous release I’ve heard in years, and a knockout 2013 death metal album." [3]
Sick Rick from Rock Revolt Magazine was thoroughly impressed, writing that the album was "Genuinely unsettling and creepy, just like a GREAT old suspenseful horror film, it took several listens for me to fully appreciate the scope and brevity in its entirety. They have grown much as a band, and a tip of the hat to you good sirs for it."[2]
