The Foundation for Professional Development (FPD) is a multi-campus Private Higher Education Institution (PHEI) based in Pretoria, South Africa.[2] It was first established in 1997 by the South African Medical Association (SAMA) as a facility for doctors to upgrade and refresh their skills, but has subsequently expanded to include qualifications in other branches of health care, nursing, business management and general teaching.

FPD has grown from its first intake of 72 students in 1998 to 300 000 students across South Africa in 2018.

As a PHEI, FPD does not receive government funding. It depends entirely on fees, donations, grants and bequests.

Tuition is a combination of campus-based classes, e-learning, and correspondence courses, with both short courses and full-length formal qualifications. Most of the faculties are related to the health sciences.

There are various provincial offices where staff are based, and FPD hires temporary venues for classes in order to mitigate geographical challenges for poor students who might not be able to afford accommodation or transport to further-flung venues.

FPD runs a mentorship programme that supports and monitors learners and graduates in their first years of employment.

FPD is the only private higher education institution in South Africa that specialises predominantly in medicine, medical research, the many aspects of health care, and health care facilities management.

Over its two and a half decades of existence, the FPD has established relationships with many universities, medical foundations, grant organisations and research institutes in order to further expand education and research into diseases such as HIV, AIDS, TB, malaria and other life-threatening diseases on the African continent.

History[edit]

All healthcare practitioners are required continually to update their professional knowledge and skills for the end benefit of the patient or client. To this end the Health Professionals Council of South Africa implemented a Continuing Professional Development programme, which incorporates updated medical practices and research, and includes ethics, human rights, and medical law.

The Foundation for Professional Development (FPD) was established in 1997 in order to create a facility to provide this training and professional programme. It is a department within the South African Medical Association.(SAMA). It is also aligned with PPO Serve, the Integrated Clinical Consortia, a consortia of health professionals in South Africa.

In 2003, the FPD registered as a Private Higher Education Institution and entered into a partnership with Yale School of Public Health. During this year the FPD also expanded its footprint into Kenya, Zambia, Lesotho and Swaziland.
