The GARDEN Home 07/10/2022
Following the February 1887 South Florida Fair in Orlando, where Ormond won prizes for its oranges,
John Anderson and Joseph Price, Ormond pioneers, cultivated an orange grove and garden to provide for their hotel needs.
Price brought in a gardener to cultivate a grove and garden. A one-bedroom cottage was built for the gardener to reside in.
John Anderson together with Joseph Price, had built a long wooden footbridge across the Halifax River, wide enough for carriages able to carry the building materials for their project, the “Hotel Ormond”, which opened on January 1, 1888. The bridge provided access to what was then a wild and undeveloped east bank of the Halifax. Both Anderson and Price were already residents of the Ormond Peninsula, with a homesteads located nearby Anderson at 211 and Price at 311 John Anderson Drive.
While Mayor of Ormond, Joseph Price called for a Doctor to care for the growing population on the peninsula and since the cottage was quite small, in 1909 Price and Anderson began building a home for Dr. Charles and Clara Garth which still stands on the property.
This Garden Home was built along with a carriage house, in what is now a drive-through garage. An indoor kitchen was added later.
The home has been carefully maintained to keep the historical integrity of the charming early 1900’s design. Original wood floors, and beautiful wood panels display the craftsmanship employed in the construction of this home. The garden driveway has parking for 14 automobiles.
While the impressive residence was built over one Century ago, modern improvements have been completed.
The Garden home surrounded by many Oak, Cedar and Cypress trees, shows a simple elegance of the 1900’s.
The property consists of two lots, 639 & 659 John Anderson Drive, situated on 3.2 acres
