The Geographer's Craft is a pioneering web-based educational curriculum, electronic textbook, and digital laboratory system in Geographic Information Science (GIScience), Global Positioning System (GPS), and spatial analysis. Developed beginning in 1992 at the University of Texas at Austin under the direction of geographer Kenneth E. Foote, the project was one of the earliest comprehensive higher education curricula designed specifically for distribution and active learning over the World Wide Web.[1]
Funded through multiple major grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the project is widely recognized for democratizing geospatial education in the 1990s and 2000s, particularly through its foundational open-access lecture modules on GPS, map projections, coordinate systems, and geodetic datums authored by Peter H. Dana.[2]
History and Development
In 1992, the Department of Geography at the University of Texas at Austin received an NSF Division of Undergraduate Education grant (DUE #9250310) to develop an active-learning undergraduate laboratory course for geographic information systems.[3] Led by Kenneth E. Foote, the development team sought to move away from traditional passive software training toward student-centered inquiry, collaborative problem solving, and real-world spatial problem analysis.
With the release of the NCSA Mosaic browser in 1993, the project transitioned to the World Wide Web as its primary authoring, distribution, and laboratory medium. A second major NSF grant awarded in 1993 (DUE #9354476, $140,000) funded the expansion of the materials into a full two-semester curriculum.[1] Over the next decade, the project team created dozens of interactive hypermedia modules, sample datasets, review questions, and laboratory exercises.
The project later expanded through the NSF-funded Virtual Geography Department Project (DUE #9554947), which applied the collaborative authoring principles developed in The Geographer's Craft across international university geography departments.[4]
Curriculum and Structure
The Geographer's Craft is organized into several foundational modules covering theoretical and applied dimensions of GIScience:
- Global Positioning System (GPS) Overview: Authored by Peter H. Dana, this comprehensive module covers satellite constellations, signal tracking, dilution of precision (DOP), differential GPS (DGPS), and carrier-phase positioning. It became one of the most widely referenced introductory GPS tutorials on the early internet.[5]
- Geodetic Datums and Coordinate Systems: Detailed treatises explaining the transition from local ellipsoids (NAD27) to global geocentric reference frames (WGS84, NAD83), universal transverse Mercator (UTM), and state plane coordinate systems.
- Map Projections: Systematic explanations of geometric distortions, developable surfaces (cylindrical, conic, azimuthal), and projection selection criteria.
- Error, Accuracy, and Precision: Rigorous conceptual frameworks for spatial error propagation, positional versus attribute uncertainty, and quality control.
- Cartographic Communication & Visualization: Principles of visual hierarchy, thematic symbolization, map design, and cognitive perception.
- Ethics in Spatial Information Systems: Early examinations of surveillance, locational privacy, data misuse, and professional ethics in digital cartography.
Impact and Recognition
During the 1990s and early 2000s, The Geographer's Craft was adopted as standard reading by hundreds of university courses, government mapping agencies (including USGS and NOAA), and professional surveyor training programs worldwide.
