The HeadacheHorse

The HeadacheHorse (Thai: ม้า-ปวดกบาล; RTGS: Ma-Puatkaban; German: Das Kopfschmerzpferd) is a Thai piano trio and a community of classical music. Founded in 2016 by students of the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand. Throughout its existence, the trio was held together by founding cellist Samatchar Pourkarua.

The ensemble dedicated itself to the discovery and share the in-depth study of the less-known chamber music works by many great classical music composers throughout music history. The HeadacheHorse sympathies have always been to create a sense of fascinating live classical music performance with all the musical knowledge possible, respectfully with historically-informed manners and also together with the energy of young Thai musicians.

History

The HeadacheHorse has also performed at major venues in Thailand such as Sala Sudasiri Sobha, Tuplane House @Agalin, Yamaha Music Salon, Goethe Saal, Sangita Vadhana Hall and, Democrazy Theatre Studio with a theater production of puppetry, shadow puppet, and mask performed with piano trio recital in a collaboration with For WhaT theatre. In 2019, the trio launched its own first classical music album “MOZART IN BEE FLAT” live recording with the vintage full-analog Reel to Reel Audiotape method and now available on many Online-Music Streaming platforms.

Name meaning

How the ensemble got this name has always been the question from the public because their name is not quite suitable for a classical musicians group. The meaning of the ensemble was given by the mother of the pianist as follows:

"We choose a horse because it can be considered as a powerful being, determined to reach the destination and at the same time, showing the love of having the freedom to explore the exotic. It also can be translated as freedom of creative thought and having an attempt to strive for concrete results. Then the headache word came from the real situations at the beginning of our assembled-time, so we put this obstacle symptom on our name to always remind us of the situation that we went through until we successfully established."

In Thai:

"เลือก Horse เพราะเป็นสิ่งที่มีพลัง มีความมุ่งมั่น ที่จะไปให้ถึงจุดหมาย ในขณะเดียวกันก็รักอิสระ แสวงหาความแปลกใหม่ เปรียบเสมือนความอิสระทางความคิดที่จะสร้างสรรค์สิ่งใหม่ๆ และมีความพยายามที่จะทำ มุ่งมั่น เพื่อให้เกิดเป็นรูปธรรมจนสำเร็จ ส่วน Headache นั้น ตอนเริ่มต้นเหมือนมีเรื่องให้ปวดหัว จะว่าไปก็เหมือนมีอุปสรรค ก็เลยเอามารวมตั้งชื่อด้วย เพื่อจะได้ไม่ลืมความรู้สึกในตอนที่เราเริ่มต้นด้วยกัน เรียกว่าเราต้องร่วมกันแก้ไขสิ่งต่างๆ จนประสบความสำเร็จในการก่อตั้ง"

Members

After their debut concert, the ensemble realized that the piano trio alone doesn't have enough power to gather the audiences to experience the arts in classical music, so they started inviting many more musicians that have the same goal "to improve the classical music society in Thailand" to join the ensemble and giving concerts together. After that, the 4th concert was full-house.
