The Healer

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Healer is a 2017 family comedy/drama directed, written, and produced by Spanish filmmaker and philanthropist Paco Arango. It is set to release in the USA on Friday, September 28, 2018, theatrically and Video On Demand.[1]

The Healer tells the story of a young man who discovers suddenly that he has the gift of healing. Trying to understand it and the new reality that it offers, a teenage girl with terminal cancer unexpectedly will show him the way. [2]

The Healer is the first film to be made with the intention of helping sick children all over the world. Since its debut in Spain and Latin America, the film has donated over $4MM to charities worldwide that support children in need. The Healer has helped many organizations internationally including, but not limited to, Foundation of Friends of Children with Leukemia and Cancer (FANLYC), Association for the Fight Against Childhood Cancer (ALCII), SANAR Foundation, Casa de la Amistad, and Association for Children and Adolescents with Cancer (TUCCA).[3]

The USA release of The Healer is dedicated to philanthropist and actor Paul Newman, who started a free camp for kids with serious illnesses. This camp ultimately launched a global network, SeriousFun. As of 2018, there are over 30 camps and programs that provide help for children and their families. The Healer has partnered with the network to be the first film to donate all net proceeds to children with serious illnesses with over $1 million raised so far.[4]

Plot[edit]

Alec Bailey (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) is a gambling, womanizing bankrupt electrical repairman who is still traumatized by the death of his twin brother. His distant uncle Raymond Heacock (Jonathan Pryce) offers to absolve his debts if he comes to stay with him in Halifax, Nova Scotia. With no alternatives, Alec accepts and embarks on a life-changing journey as his uncle soon reveals that he comes from a long-time family of healers with the gift of being able to heal all those who are diseased if fate allows. Trying to understand this gift and the new reality that it offers Alec meets Cecilia (Camilla Luddington), a beauty and local veterinarian, and a teenage girl Abigail (Kaitlyn Bernard) with terminal cancer who unexpectedly show him the way.[5]

Producation[edit]

The Healer was shot in June of 2016 in Halifax and Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.[7] Paco Arango wrote the theme song, “We Take Our Fun Seriously,” for the worldwide ending credits of The Healer. Jamie Lou Stenzel is the vocalist behind the feature song.[8]

SeriousFun Children's Network[edit]

Serious Fun Children’s Network is benefiting from The Healer’s USA debut as they are donating all net proceeds to the program.[9]

Paul Newman created a free camp back in 1988 for children who suffered from serious medical conditions called, The Hole in the Wall Gang. The camp was a place for children to cut loose and forget about their diagnosis, just for a little, and be themselves. This concept started a movement and lead to the formation of the global network, SeriousFun. SeriousFun provides children and their families with a supportive environment that fosters growth and creates opportunities without the limitation of their illness. Today, there are 30 camps and programs serving the needs of children and families around the world.[10]
