The Hometown Project is a non-profit political organization founded by musician Peter Salett following the 2016 election[1] and based in Brooklyn, NY. The organization focuses on electing progressive candidates in state-level races by creating candidate endorsement and get-out-the-vote videos with actors and musicians who possess personal connections to those states and districts.[2] The videos are released on social media and targeted at voters specifically in those states and districts.[1]

Work

In 2018, Ohio natives Molly Shannon and Wet Hot American Summer director David Wain filmed videos in support of Ohio General Assembly candidates[3]; actress Danielle Brooks, star of Orange is the New Black, filmed videos to help elect several Democratic candidates running for office in her home state of South Carolina[4]; and actor Michael Shannon helped get-out-the-vote efforts through a video centered on his home state of Kentucky.[5]

In 2019, singer Jason Mraz participated in videos for Democrats running near his hometown of Mechanicsville, Virginia; actor Jason George supported candidates in his hometown of Virginia Beach; comedian and Hampton University alum Wanda Sykes promoted the candidacies of Democrats running in the Hampton Roads area and Portsmouth; and Virginia native Patton Oswalt created testimonial videos for Senate candidate John Bell as well as candidates for several regional races.[2][6] Connie Britton, another actor with Virginia roots, also supported a local candidate running for the Virginia General Assembly.[7]
