Development[edit]

Matteo Pilati began collecting ideas from the film’s plot in the late summer of 2021, immediately after the release of his first film, Mascarpone, reminiscing memories from his own experience at summer camps in his youth. By January 2022 the first draft of the script (written by Pilati, Giuseppe Paternò Raddusa and Tommaso Triolo) was submitted to Amazon Studios and immediately picked up.

Casting[edit]

Gianmarco Saurino, who previously worked with Pilati on Mascarpone, was the first choice for the role of Nicola. In July, 2022 screen legend Stefania Sandrelli and comedian Nino Frassica were signed on the project, as well as Pilati’s frequent collaborator Michela Giraud and dancer Giuseppe Giofrè, in his acting debut[2], on supporting roles.

Filming[edit]

The film was shot in Rome and the South of Sicily between August and October, 2022.

Soundtrack[edit]

The original score of the film is composed by Umberto Gaudino and Jean Michel Sneider. The original song for the film, Fulmini addosso, is written and performed by singer-songwriter Francesca Michielin.

Promotion[edit]

A teaser trailer for the film was released on June 1st, 2023 on the film’s announcement on Prime Video Italy’s social media[3]

Release[edit]

The film was released on July 6th, 2023 on the streaming platform Prime Video.[1]

Reception[edit]

Critical reception[edit]

For Raschi Acharya on FilmFugitives: “The Hottest Summer imparts a valuable lesson about navigating complex situations with maturity and without causing harm to oneself or others. It embraces the idea that sometimes we may not end up with the person we desire, but that’s perfectly okay. […] The Hottest Summer succeeds in delivering an intriguing narrative that celebrates life’s twists and turns, making it an enjoyable and thought-provoking cinematic experience.”[4]

For Emil Hofileña on A Good Film To Watch: “To The Hottest Summer's credit, it doesn't shy away from its title; as an erotic romcom, it gives us more sexual content than you'd expect, while still keeping away from anything too explicit. There's an undeniably exciting quality to how much the film is willing to show in its forbidden romance, and lead actors Nicole Damiani and Gianmarco Saurino have chemistry to spare.”[5]

Alan Ng on Film Threat praises the acting as well: “The Hottest Summer works primarily because of our leads. Damiani, Angelica, and Saurino are very pretty people caught in the throws of passion.”[6]
