The Hunt (comic)

The Hunt is an ongoing supernatural romance comic created by Lucid. The comic follows the characters Avery and Rhys and showcases their developing relationships, as well as supernatural themes such as ghosts, witches, and werewolves. The Hunt began publication on both Webtoons and Tapas on October 18, 2019 and continues to be updated biweekly.

Plot

“Avery and Rhys rekindle their middle school hobby of hunting for ghosts in their senior year of college. Avery wants to join the super elite paranormal investigators club, Ghost Encounters Inc., while Rhys is as skeptical as he is averse to full moons. Slowly but surely they uncover the haunting secrets of their local abandoned asylum as well as their feelings for one another.” (Lucid).

Characters

Avery Burke-Madigan: Strongly believes in ghosts and is striving to gain proof of their existence in order to be able to join the GEI.
Rhys Lupescu: Having recently returned from studying abroad, he reconnected with Avery and picked up the role of cameraman for their ghost hunts. Although he is a supernatural being himself (werewolf), he is skeptical of whether ghosts are real but aids Avery in his search for proof because he has a crush on him.
Wesley: Friend of Avery and a member of the GEI
Rik: Leader of the GEI, got abducted by the "ghosts" in part 1.
Trent: Member of the GEI often the cameraman
Bobby: Avery's boss
Vanessa: One of Avery's moms, who secretly is adept at witchcraft.
Leah: One of Avery's mom, works at the fire department.
Sheridan: College student, suspiciously interested in Rik's disappearance. Also a supernatural creature.
Hendrey Lupescu: Rhys's uncle, who is a mechanic at Lupescu Auto Repair.
Cash: Rhys's ex Friend with Benefits

Publication

The Hunt is hosted on multiple platforms, including Webtoons, Tapas, and Lucids comic website yaoi.biz. The Hunt comic started on October 18, 2019 however promotional drawings were posted on Webtoons and Tapas as early as July 23, 2019. The comic is currently on going and is updated biweekly on Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Hunt Part 1 is also in the process of being independently published, in both paperback and hardcover and is currently available for preorder on Lucids website, misslucidcomics.com.

Reception

The Hunt on Webtoons has 18.1 million views, 118,224 subscribers to the series, and a rating of 9.73/10. The comic has similar statistics on Tapas with 18.5 million views, 102.6 thousand subscribers, and 1.4 million likes.

Lucid also individually published the first chapter in both paperback and hardback form and used crowd funding in order to achieve this. The Hunt Part 1 kickstarter had 1,421 backers with a total pledge of $105,905 greatly exceeding the goal which was $30,000. So not only is the series successful in digital form but also shows that people enjoy the series enough to purchase physical copies even when it's available for free online.

Miss Lucid is a full time webcomic artist and author based in Minneapolis Minnesota. Lucid not only publishes The Hunt but has created other webcomics as well including, Avialae, Occultus, and River St.
