“The K-Wang” is a song by American rapper Khia, released in August 2002 as the second single from her debut studio album, Thug Misses. The song was a moderate radio hit on urban stations and the accompanying dance was popular in Tampa-area clubs in the fall of 2002. In the years since its release, the song has also become associated with a line dance.[2]
Background and reception[edit]
Both the title of the song and associated dance originated from a local Tampa club-goer known as “K-Wang” who frequented the bars where Khia worked in her early days as a rapper. In March 2022, Khia told Billboard, “I was managing a bar in Tampa. It was Studio 7 and Club XS. When we had acts that would come through, I would open up.”[3] The song’s lyrics encourage listeners to do the K-Wang dance and reference the aforementioned bars as well as Tampa neighborhood Robles Park.
Initially released as a b-side to “My Neck, My Back (Lick It)”, “The K-Wang” was serviced to urban radio in August 2002, becoming one of the most added tracks the week of August 16.[4] In its August 2nd issue, Radio & Records quoted WERQ Baltimore DJ Dr. Doom saying, "Khia's "K- Wang" took some time for the people to get, because they didn't know how to do the dance. Now they get it, and no matter what time you put this record on in the club, it will pack the dance floor."[5] In its September 13 issue, they quoted WMBX West Palm Beach DJ Mark McCray that “The K-Wang” had become the top-requested song on the phone lines.[6] In the September 27 issue, "The K-Wang" was again selected as one of the week's hottest songs by WBVD Melbourne DJ Zac Davis, who noted the song was "big in the clubs.”[7] In Airplay Monitors’ January 10, 2003 issue, the song was ranked number 2 on WLLD Tampa and called a "local hit."[8] Ultimately, the song never reached the Billboard charts, but its popularity continued after its release as it became associated with a line dance.[2]
In addition to the original version of the song, a So So Def remix by Jermaine Dupri and Bryan-Michael Cox was promoted to radio as well.[3]
Music video[edit]
No music video was created for the song at the time of its release. However, in September 2022, Khia produced and released a music video to celebrate the single’s twentieth anniversary. The music video shows Khia and various dancers in different scenes around Tampa, Florida, performing the K-Wang dance. It concludes with footage of the original club-goer "K-Wang" performing the dance outside a liquor store.[9]
Usage in media[edit]
The instrumental of the song was used for a freestyle in a scene in the pilot episode of HBO Max series Rap Sh!t.[10]
