History[edit]

The KVJ Show serves the morning drive on WRMF. On July 29, 2014, The KVJ Show debuted on WRMF, returning to West Palm Beach after a brief stint on Cox Media Group-owned WFLC in Miami. The show moved to WFLC in 2013 from West Palm Beach-based WLDI-FM where it was home from 1999-2013. The KVJ Show (originally known as Kevin and Virginia in the Morning and later The Wild Morning Show with Kevin and Virginia, from 1999 until its departure to 97.3 The Coast (now known as Hits 97.3) in Miami on Monday August 5, 2013. The show has since resurfaced in the area on rival 97.9 WRMF.

The beginning[edit]

The KVJ Show began on Wild 95.5 (WLDI) in West Palm Beach on May 7, 1999. Kevin Rolston had been the morning co-host for Denis Prior at Mix 93.3 (KMXV) in Kansas City. Kevin was hired to host the show and brought in Virginia McGrane from Biloxi, Mississippi to be his co-host. Kevin had met Virginia through a mutual friend, Scott Sands, at Morning Show Boot-camp in New Orleans, Louisiana, Virginia’s hometown. Kevin was wearing a Jesters hat, he had bought on Bourbon Street, and Virginia thought he was a jackass.

Man in white[edit]

A promotion to introduce the show to the market was introduced by the Program Director of the radio station, Jordan Walsh. The idea was to dress Kevin in a white tuxedo and put him in a white limousine. He would go around West Palm Beach handing out $100. As talk of this Man In White spread, Kevin did several interviews on various radio stations to increase the hype. For the grand finale, Kevin headed to the Gardens Mall. His appearance had been well promoted in the local media and close to 2,000 eager people was waiting for him at the lower-level below the food court. As Kevin descended on the escalator, a mob of people rushed him. He was snatched from the melee by local police and taken to an office in the back corridor of the mall. During an interrogation, Kevin gave the whole story of the promotion. When the Program Director, Jordan Walsh, was called for verification, he denied even knowing Kevin. Fortunately, Kevin was still released, without an arrest, but he did receive a lifetime ban from the Gardens Mall. That ban was lifted 5 years later.

Interns[edit]

In Kansas City, Kevin had been the “stunt boy” for Danny Douglas (Czeckalinski). So, he wanted to have the same for his first time hosting a morning show. With no budget, they found an intern, Mike Rolo, who on-air went simply as “Rolo”. “Rolo” lasted a year, before moving on. In came an intern duo of Matt & Jared. Jared was later renamed “Alf,” because of his love for the 80’s TV show. Interns Matt & Alf became better known for their misses than their hits. During the “flying chad” debacle in Palm Beach County with the 2000 Presidential election, Matt & Alf, in George W. Bush and Al Gore masks were to get into a fist fight behind the reporter doing national cut-ins from the Palm Beach County courthouse on CNN. Matt & Alf never found the camera, despite all of America seeing them clearly pacing back and forth in the background. Matt & Alf were later replaced by Intern Joey and then Intern Todd. Intern Todd was also known as the white Barry White, because of how deep his voice was and for the style of his speech. Todd would be the last intern for Kevin & Virginia.

Jason Joins The Show[edit]

After a failed, lengthy national search to find Todd’s replacement, Kevin decided that he would likely have better luck simply finding someone from the area who was entertaining. So, he held a 5-day contest to find the next Todd. Five finalists were chosen and for a whole week they would perform parody songs, bits and even a street stunt. At the end of the contest, an eccentric local baseball instructor was the obvious choice. Despite trying to go by the nickname of King Perta during the contest, he simply became Jason to the audience. (AKA Texarado Longhand, Super Pi, Hulk Hoagie, Zombie Hulk Hoagie) Jason joined the show just after the 5-year anniversary of the Kevin & Virginia Show.

Producers[edit]

The first full-time producer for Kevin & Virginia was Justin Scheman. He left the show shortly before the departure of Intern Todd. A former intern Marianna Dennis took his place. Marianna was a key part of the show on-air and soon the show evolved from being the Kevin & Virginia Show to being The Wild Morning Show with Kevin, Virginia, Jason & Marianna. Due to a personality clash with Virginia, Marianna decided to leave the show. She was replaced with another longtime producer, Heather Nelson. Heather had left the show and was working as a manager at Office Depot when Kevin convinced her to come back to radio. Since Heather was more of an off-air producer, the show changed its name to The Kevin, Virginia & Jason Show. For short, The KVJ Show would be used. Heather stayed with the show through the move to WFLC in Miami. Once the show did not renew their contract with Cox Media Group, Heather accepted an offer by iHeartMedia to do digital work for the Paul & Young Ron Show at WBGG-FM BIG 105.9 in Miami. Heather was replaced by Josh Duer. Josh began a friendship with Jason while working with him on projects for his comedic rap group, The Snack Pack. Jason got Josh into the radio industry by helping him get a job at WFLC. When the show moved to WRMF in July 2014, Josh Duer, or “Producer Dennys” officially joined The KVJ Show.

Stations[edit]

The KVJ Show was heard for 14 years on Wild 95.5 (WLDI). They were also syndicated to My 94.3 in Sarasota and WEOW in Key West from 2011 to 2013. The show moved from iHeartMedia to Cox Media Group and their station 97.3 The Coast (WFLC) in May 2013. A management change and a reversal of strategy led to a turbulent year for The KVJ Show through the end of 2013 and into 2014. The KVJ Show had been all-talk on Wild 95.5, but wound up playing as many as 10 songs an hour at WFLC. After a year-long agreement had been honored, The KVJ Show returned to the West Palm Beach market on 97.9 WRMF on July 27, 2014.
