The Lαβ is a not-for-profit UK-based neuroscience organisation operating globally, using a collaborative approach to combine ethnographic methodologies from the fields of visual, social, and cultural anthropology with neuroscience, both in-person and remotely. Their approach is applied to both academic and non-academic settings. It has academic links and partnerships with a number of organisations: National University of Singapore[1][2], University of the Western Cape (South Africa)[3][4][5], The Alan Turing Institute (UK)[6], Stellenbosch University (South Africa)[7], Delft University of Technology (The Netherlands)[8], Creative Computing Institute at the University of the Arts London (UK),[9], and a multi-disciplinary Advisory Group of experts from a number of diverse fields (Law, policy, data protection, ethics, psychiatry, mental health, clinical psychologist, anthropology, data science and machine learning, tech-space, engineering, lived experience, digital transformation, IT infrastructure, community engagement, creative arts-based research methods).[10]

History and ethos

It was founded in October 2021 by Dr Becky Inkster and Dr Mark Sheppard, and initially was a curiosity led, real-world approach which developed quickly into sophisticated analytical approaches using novel quantitative and qualitative methodologies, utilising lightweight mobile Electroencephalogram (EEG) neurotechnology. Repurposing commercially available neurotechnology equipment with a focus on brand agnosticism is key to their practice [11], which is distinctly separate from clinical and laboratory based methodology.
