History[edit]

Peter O'Mahony , founder of the Laughter Lounge, previously lived in London, having invested and worked in a printing company there. Eventually, Peter decided to move his family back to Ireland. He brought the staff of the printing company to Jongleurs comedy club as a gesture of farewell and was inspired to set up something similar in Dublin, and so he did.[5] Peter returned home and went in search of a location for his comedy club. He managed to seal a deal in an old, iconic movie theatre called 'The Corinthian Picture Theatre' in Eden Quay, Dublin. The Laughter Lounge opened its doors in December 1997. The Laughter Lounge branched out to venues all over Ireland having events in the Roisin Dubh in Galway, The Odyessy in Belfast and The Forum in Waterford. The building was later demolished in 2002. [6]

After the demolition, Peter acquired some investors and together they invested 6 million euro into refurbishing the building.[7] The refurbishment was supposed to take just 15 months but during the construction work, viking remains of a young boy were found. This caused huge delays in the refurbishment process and the advancing of the Irish comedy scene. [8] Eventually, after four years of refurbishment, the Laughter Lounge reopened and quickly established itself an Ireland's Premier Comedy Venue. [9]

The Laughter Lounge has hosted some of the greatest comedians including Tommy Tiernan, Dara O'Briain, Des Bishop, Jo Brand, Sarah Millican, Alan Carr, Kevin Bridges and Jimmy Carr.
