The Lever is a reader-supported online news outlet that focuses on investigative journalism. The organization was founded in 2020 by American journalist David Sirota.[1]

According to the outlet’s website, “The Lever’s reporting, podcasts, videos, and live events focus on politics, business and corruption — and how money shapes and distorts economic and environmental policy.”[2]

Initially named The Daily Poster, the outlet was rebranded as The Lever in 2022.[3]

History[edit]

Sirota founded the outlet in April 2020, after ending his work as senior advisor and speechwriter for Bernie Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign.[4] The Lever launched on the publishing platform Substack, before moving to Ghost in May 2021.[5] Regarding the move, Sirota told The New York Times, “we want our operation and our brand to stand on its own.”[6]

The Lever is supported by readers through paid subscriptions. As Sirota noted in a post, “As one of the few reader-supported news outlets covering politics and government, we hold ourselves accountable only to you, our subscribers.”[7]

In March 2021, New York legislators credited the organization with helping to expose the COVID-19 nursing home scandal that helped lead to the resignation of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.[8] The Washington Post credited The Lever with revealing how President Joe Biden’s Education Department was contesting bankruptcy discharges for federal student loan borrowers, while The Guardian noted that the outlet was the first to report that Biden officials ignored scientific warnings about climate change when it leased parts of the Gulf of Mexico for offshore drilling.[9][10]

Articles from The Lever have been syndicated in Newsweek, The Guardian, Jacobin, The American Prospect, and The Daily Beast.[11][12][13][14][15]

In June 2022, The Lever launched a weekly podcast called Lever Time.[16]
