The Longest Tale is an upcoming action rpg being developed by Dev Null Productions and slated to be released in winter 2025-2026 for PC/Mac and in 2027 for Android/iOS and consoles. The player controls four characters who explore, fight, and sneak their way through a high-fantastical world, piecing together scattered fragments of lore to reveal the unified epic. Planning began in early 2023 with development beginning in earnest later on that year.

Inspirations behind The Longest Tale include Journey, Shadow of the Colossus, and Dark Souls. Drawing from classic 1980's fantasy movies such as The NeverEnding Story and Conan The Barbarian, the underlying thematic pillars incorporate elements of wonder, solitude, and grandeur.

Playstyle

Players start off as an unnamed character simply referred to as the “Rogue” sitting at a campfire in a dark and ominous woods. A nearby NPC hints at the player's mission and gives clues as to how to navigate through the treacherous environment. From there, the player process on his quest, avoiding the spectral entities and solving puzzles.

At several points in the player's journey, they are presented with a branch in the path or an option on how to proceed, choosing one way or the other results in different gameplay experiences and leads to different results. Upon encountering an older man sitting by a campfire deep in the environment, the player is recounted the tale of the desert nomad, at which point the environment switches to the bright desert with the player now controlling the nomad.

Gameplay progresses in this manner, in the desert the player must fight enemies of an opposing force seeking to preclude her from completing her mission. Elements of stealth, free climbing, puzzles, and more are progressively introduced during the adventure and the player makes her way along multiple routes to get to the chapter's conclusion. No matter which way the player takes, a magic carpet riding segment is undertaken, a unique gameplay mechanic in The Longest Tale.

Subsequent chapters include the Tale of the Ninja's Infiltration and the Tale of the Adventurer's Quest, which takes place in a high-altitude Japanese mountainous environment and a surreal gothic environment respectively. The gameplay loop is expanded upon via progressively more challenging encounters and puzzles as well as more intricate level flow until the game's conclusion.

Development

Dev Null Productions was incorporated in early 2018 as a cryptocurrency solution provider. In 2021, after a few years of various endeavors in the sector, the startup received grant funding from Ripple Labs to build Ledger City, a 3D metaverse that tied into the XRP ledger. At its peak, Ledger City saw over 10,000 concurrent users who partook in mini-games in the virtual city, including customization of building tied to blockchain accounts via NFTs.

In early 2022, Dev Null Productions dropped cryptocurrency initiatives and decided instead to solely focus on game development. After a brief hiatus to undertake market research and strategic planning, development on The Longest Tale franchise began in earnest in 2023. Initial work was focused on establishing the thematic elements of the game, the look and feel of the world, and the overall flow of player experience. The expansion of the studio in 2024 saw the onboarding of associates previously working a Sega, Ubisoft, EA, Lucas Film, and more. The principal release of the initial game is planned for winter 2025–2026, with mobile and console ports, as well as cross-medium sequels and tie-ins planned for the future.

Reception

Builds of the game that have been made available to widespread audiences have received overwhelmingly positive reviews. In a recent round of playtesting (Summer 2025), over 85% of players gave the game a “highly favorable” score and indicated that they would purchase The Longest Tale when it was available for sale and would recommend the game to friends and family.
