The Mac Observer
The Mac Observer is a website that publishes Mac, iPhone, and Apple related news, reviews, tips, and podcasts. The site was launched on December 29, 1998 by Dave Hamilton and Bryan Chaffin. The site has evolved from just providing news and reviews to now hosting popular podcasts, columns, and more.
History
The macobserver.com domain was registered on December 17, 1998.[1] and the site launched on December 29th of that same year. Through its history, The Mac Observer has had several stories and features which gained traction[2] with the mainstream media from sources like The New York Times[3] and Engadget[4] that cover topics like Controlled Leaks[5], Apple's New Corporate Campus[6], Virus Protection for the Mac[7], Unannounced Apple Products[8], Climate Change[9], Apple Lawsuits[10], and the launch of Apple's MacOS X Operating System[11].
During Apple's troubled years (and continuing since!), The Mac Observer's "Apple Death Knell Counter" has documented 71 separate instances of journalists[12], analysts[13], and pundits[14] reporting Apple's death (or near death).
Starting in 2022, Dr. Serhat Kurt acquired The Mac Observer from Dave Hamilton and Bryan Chaffin[15][16][17]
Podcasts
Starting in 2005, The Mac Observer has been developing its own podcasts, including Mac Geek Gab[18] (hosted by Dave Hamilton and John F. Braun), Media+ (hosted by Charlotte Henry), The Apple Context Machine (hosted by Bryan Chaffin), and The Mac Observer's Daily Observations (hosted by Kelly Guimont).
Notable Columnists at The Mac Observer
Bob "Dr. Mac" LeVitus has been writing Dr. Mac's Rants & Raves for The Mac Observer since 2003.[19]
Andy Ihnatko wrote the "Ihnatko" column for The Mac Observer from 2003 to 2005.[20]
Cirque Du Mac
From 2004 through 2014, The Mac Observer and BackBeat Media partnered to produce "Cirque du Mac",[21] a party at Macworld Expo in San Francisco including trapeze artists, silks acrobats, unicycle clowns, henna tattoos, face painting and, of course, free drinks for anyone lucky enough to score a ticket. The Macworld All-Star Band[22] performed at every Cirque du Mac party and was the focus of the event.
In 2020, during the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Macworld All-Star Band remotely reunited to create two pandemic-relief performances.[23][24]
