The Malibu Bikini Shop is a 1987 teen comedy film written and directed by David Wechter and starring Michael David Wright and Bruce Greenwood as two brothers who inherit and work together to keep their late aunt's bikini shop is business.

Plot[edit]

On the day of his college graduation, business major Alan Finstock learns his aunt Ida Miller has died in an accidental drowning. The opening credits show a drunken Ida hopping on a jet ski late at night after she closes her shop for the night. Alan, who is engaged to the dominant Jane Rutledge, heads to California and learns he has inherited 51% of all of Ida's assets. The other 49% is inherited by Todd, Alan's estranged brother who is the complete opposite of Alan. Todd is a free-spirit who thrives on having fun. Upon their arrival at Ida's Bikini Shop, they are introduced to salespeople Kathy, Cindy, and Ronnie. Alan takes an interest in Ronnie right away. The brothers are also living together in Ida's old house.

Alan intends to sell the bikini shop while Todd wants to keep it in business. Despite his intentions to sell the shop, Alan soon finds himself in situations he never imagined. They go from dreaming about Ronnie to Todd informing him that the three girls are moving into the house due to a dispute with their landlord over the lease. When Jane arrives in California, chaos ensues. Alan's attempts to sell the shop are futile until he meets Eric Greene, the founder of a New Age-style religion. Todd, upset that Alan has decided to make the deal, leaves in anger. When Alan signs the contract, he instantly regrets his decision and tells Eric he has changed his mind. Eric makes Alan an offer that if he can make $75,000, the cost of the contract, by a certain date, he will gladly relinquish ownership back to Alan and Todd. This infuriates Jane, who gives Alan an ultimatum: either he sticks with the plan or it is over between them. Alan dumps Jane and soon finds himself falling in love with Ronnie, who has had feelings for Alan ever since they met.

Alan, who thanks to Ronnie and his experiences, has become more similar to his brother, and Todd, who has forgiven Alan, decide to work together and begin a plan to keep the bikini shop open. With Ronnie's skills in design, the plan is for the shop to unveil a new military look. As business starts booming, Jane and her father, who has come to California to confront Alan, plan to sabotage the sales. With only one bikini left to sell, Jane threatens to tear the swimsuit and foil the brothers' plan to save the shop. Alan begs Jane not to rip the bikini, but Jane does so and, thanks to a nearby police officer who happened to be in the shop, is forced to pay for the ripped bikini. Alan gives Eric his $75,000 and the shop is kept open. The finale takes a hilarious turn when Todd organizes a race with a gift card to the shop as a prize, but secretly Todd has ordered dissolving surgical strings for the bikinis, which causes the racers to lose their tops, making everyone around laugh in glee.
