The Mighty John Waynes

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Mighty John Waynes are an American rock band often recognized as the progenitors of a garage rock/post-punk revival and garage punk resurgence in the Mid West.[citation needed] Founded in 1996 in Indianapolis, Indiana by singer/guitarist’s Jade Gordley and Justin Allen, they released two 7” vinyl records.

Jade "Gooch" Gordley died on June 24, 2015, at the age of 39.[citation needed]

History[edit]

The Mighty John Waynes was founded in 1996 by Jade Gordley and Justin Allen.[citation needed] Gordley had been playing in local bands of South Carolina and NYC since 1988, including a rare Christmas set as the guitarist of the Ramones at CBGB.[citation needed] He relocated to Indianapolis, Indiana where he met Allen, who had sung in the bands the Abnormals and Sicko (not to be confused with Seattle's Sicko).[1] They began writing garage punk tunes together and by the year 2000 The Mighty John Wayne’s had dominated the Indianapolis punk scene.[2] As the band began to receive praises under the national spotlight, they were personally hitting rock bottom via death, drug and addiction problems causing them to disband in 2002.[citation needed]

Cultural influence[edit]

The Mighty John Waynes draws from a variety of influences including 1960s garage rock and 1970s punk. The former bands of TMJW’s members nurtured the growing 1990s garage punk scene of the Mid West and by the turn of the century they were considered the face of original garage rock revival / post-punk revival.[citation needed] The band is credited with influencing many other popular acts including The Slurs & The Jabs.[citation needed] They were voted in Maximumrocknroll’s top ten list several times.[3]
