The Modern Rogue is a YouTube channel created and hosted by magician Brian Brushwood and author/screenwriter Jason Murphy[1] in 2016 and based in Austin, Texas.[2] The channel's videos often focus on one of the "Three Pillars of a Modern Rogue", which the channel defines as "a gentleman, a warrior, and a scoundrel".[3] As such, the videos often focus on topics such as making homemade weapons, mixing cocktails, and testing various methods of spying. [4] Brushwood and Murphy have stated that their goal is to become "the ultimate Modern Rogue".[5] The channel often makes use of Brushwood's career as a magician to inform viewers about safety, as well as make videos about topics like fire eating.

The channel owns a 7 acre former nudist colony outside of Austin, Texas, known as the Modern Rogue World Headquarters, which functions as the main production site for The Modern Rogue, as well as Brushwood and Murphy's other productions.[6] Previous channel guests include Macaulay Culkin. The channel is also known for their various mannequins, each of which is named. The mannequins are used when a human stand-in is necessary, such as when testing a homemade trap or weapon. These mannequins include "The Changeling" and "Dave".

Murphy and Brushwood first met around 2000, when Murphy drunkenly asked Brushwood to teach him a magic trick.[7]
