The Moinian Group is a privately-owned real estate development firm based in New York City. Founded in 1982 by Joseph Moinian, The Moinian Group is among the few national real estate entities to develop, own and operate properties across every asset category, including office, hotel, retail, condominiums, and rental apartments.[1] Since its founding, The Moinian Group has grown to become one of the country’s largest privately held real estate firms, with a portfolio in excess of 20 million square feet, valued at over $8 billion.[2]

History

In 1982, Joseph Moinian founded The Moinian Group to invest in real estate, leveraging earnings from his apparel company to purchase buildings in Manhattan.[2] Moinian’s first acquisition was at 450-460 Park Avenue South, an office building located in Midtown South.[3]

Since 1982, The Moinian Group has grown into one of the largest privately-held real estate companies in the United States, with a portfolio of over 20 million square feet[2] across major cities including New York, Miami, Dallas, and Los Angeles.[4]

The Moinian Group is currently developing numerous residential, office, and retail properties, including:

  • 3 Hudson Boulevard, a 2 million square foot, Class A office tower in the Hudson Yards District, in collaboration with Boston Properties. The building will occupy the entire block between 11th Avenue and Hudson Boulevard Park, extending from West 34th Street to West 35th Street. Occupancy is expected to begin in 2023.[34]
  • 123 Linden Boulevard, 467-unit luxury residential project in Brooklyn, New York.[35]

Lending and Venture Capital

The Moinian Group has recently expanded their operations into new areas of the real estate business, including lending and technology. [3]

Currency M

Currency M, led by Mitchell Moinian, is The Moinian Group’s venture capital arm, providing early-stage investment, support, and resources to innovators seeking to redefine the built environment. [3]

To date, Currency M has invested and partnered with 11 startups, including OnSiteIQ, rOcean, Paintzen, Knotel, Nestio, Ollie, The Well, Rhino, inDinero, Moved and TF Living.[38]

Moinian Capital Partners

In addition to Currency M, The Moinian Group recently launched Moinian Capital partners, which provides flexible financing solutions for premier commercial real estate projects throughout the United States. [3]

Moinian Capital Partners has committed close to $1 billion into the commercial real estate market.[3]

Recognition

The Moinian Group was named as New York City’s 5th most active real estate developer by The Real Deal in 2018.[39]

Additionally, Joseph Moinian was named #29 in the Commercial Observer’s Power 100: Commercial Real Estate’s Most Powerful Players.[40]
