The New Art Fest
The New Art Fest [1] (where art meets technology) is an international event based in Lisbon Portugal. It was founded in 2016 by artist António Cerveira Pinto [2] (its first Artistic Director), and Ocupart [3], an art agency run by Luísa Moreira and Teresa Boieiro. As part of its Maker Art section, the Black Raven Award highlights excellence among new media art projects presented to the festival's international Open Call.
History
The first edition of The New Art Fest [4] began in November 2016 with an opening at the National Museum of Natural History and Science (MUHNAC) followed by twenty days of talks, seminars, conferences and an exhibition.[5]
The festival is officially partnering with the City of Lisbon (Câmara Municipal de Lisboa). Since the beginning the festival is endorsed by partners like the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon and the National Museum of Contemporary Art.[6] [7] Some editions were officially supported by the ministry of culture of the Portuguese Republic.[8] [9]
The establishing of an art and technology festival in Lisbon may be understood in the wider scope of a culture-rich capital, which is currently transforming into a start-up hub. In 2017 The New Art Fest cooperated directly with the Lisbon Web Summit [10], an annual technology conference held in Lisbon, considered the largest tech event in the world.
In 2016 The New Art Fest hosted established artists like the Brazilian-Portuguese musician, architect, photographer and intermedia artist Emanuel Dimas de Melo Pimenta[11] and artists, Leonel Moura, Eva and Franco Mattes, and Ken Rinaldo, among many others.[12], as well as experimental artworks like the Perpetual Self Dis/Infecting Machine.[13] During the 2017 edition of the festival the artist Leonel Moura installed BeBot, a swarm of robot-painters demonstrating the power of future autonomous art.[14] [15] Another artist who contributed artworks to the 2017 edition of the festival is Manuel Casimiro.[16] In 2018 the project Turbulence.org(1996) of the New Radio and Performing Arts, Inc. (NRPA) was presented by Helen Thorington and Jo-Anne Green.[17] Some works of this art database were previously exhibited at several Whitney Biennials of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. [18] Some other participants of the 2018 editions were John F. Simon Jr., John Klima and Lynn Hershman Leeson.[19]
Sometimes the festival worked with guest curators, for example with Brian Mackern, Gustavo Romano and Nilo Casares in 2018.[20]
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2020 edition of The New Art Fest was transformed into a digital festival.[21]
The Black Raven Award
The Black Raven Award is a monetary prize, accompanied by its emblematic trophy, a black raven printed with 3D technology.[22]
