The New CALassic is an album released by music journalist Anthony Fantano under his alter ego and fictional roommate Cal Chuchesta.[3] It was released on 18 August 2015.[4] It features 16 songs, 2 of which are bonus tracks, that follow an overarching story. The album's name is a pun on Iggy Azalea's debut album The New Classic.[3] It was the number one most streamed album on Audiomack the day after release.[5] As March 2018, it has over 600,000 plays and is number 291 most played.[4]
Some songs in the album are parodies of other songs such as Hot Dinner which is parody of Bobby Shmurda's "Hot Nigga" or Cocoa which parodies "CoCo" by O.T. Genasis.[2]
Concept and storyline[edit]
Cal, after receiving a message from A&R executive Doody playing up Cal's potential to becoming a star,[2] releases three tracks that act as a subplot to the whole narrative: Parody, Be My Bae Bae and Sad Boy.[3] In Parody, Cal addresses criticism he frequently receives – that some believe that he is simply a joke. Cal responds in turn by assuring the listener that he is in fact not a parody, and that his detractors are simply "unable to comprehend his fresh and innovative style". Cal Chuchesta is sampling Drake's 0 to 100 / The Catch Up.[6] In Be My Bae Bae Cal raps about how he would flirt with a women he likes. The song, though, ends in him getting rejected, transitioning into the next song: Sad Boy.[7] In this song Cal expresses his feelings of rejection and depression.[8]
Afterwards, Cal receives a second message from Doody again playing up how other rappers are inferior to him.[9] This gets him to a radio interview where the two hosts challenge him to a freestyle. Unfortunately, the hosts were disappointed.[2][10] This makes Cal angry, thus making him release two other songs: I Am Angry, a parody of OG Maco's U Guessed It[11], and I Need My Friends which samples 1 Train by ASAP Rocky[12]. In I Am Angry Cal expresses his anger towards the radio show's hosts and his confusion as to why people don't like his music. The song is also a diss to other rappers in general. In its finishing bars, Cal says how he'll make some phone calls to get his friends.[11] This transition to the next song: I need my friends. In the first half of the song, Cal as well with FrankJavCee, John Sakars and 3Pac[13] rap about friendship and how good it is to have them. In the latter half of the song though, Cal tried to bring his roommate Anthony Fantano himself to rap, but Anthony refused and had an argument, in the end sending Cal back to the "Whack Cal Zone". The song ends with Anthony apologizing to listeners as to what they have heard for the previous minutes.[12]
