The Peel Club
The Peel Club is a private members' club in St James's, London, founded by several members of the Carlton Club for those with an active and special interest in philosophy, politics, economics, and security. The club is named after the former prime minister of the United Kingdom, Sir Robert Peel, 2nd Baronet and describes itself as a centre-right conservative fellowship.[1][2]
Membership
Candidates are chosen based on individual merit but are thought to be of high social status or influence within the areas of politics, government, academia, and industry. The membership is male-only and designed to be an executive network for effecting important business, on top of serving ordinary social purposes.[3]
Meetings
Main meetings of the club are in the format of grand white tie banquets in opulent stately homes, where a strict dress code is enforced and the celebrations are overtly ceremonial and sumptuous.[1]
History and archives
The club has a private archive of historic documents and artefacts relevant to the history of the United Kingdom, Westminster and the Royal Family, and a handful of nationally important items have been made public, such as personal letters from Queen Victoria to Sir Robert Peel. These items would usually be part of The Royal Collection at Windsor Castle.[4]
