The Police Are Blundering in the Dark (Italian: La polizia brancola nel buio, lit. 'The Police Gropes in the Dark') is a 1975 Italian giallo film directed by Helia Colombo, starring Joseph Arkim, Francisco Cortéz, and Richard Fielding. Gabriella Giorgelli and Halina Zalewska also appear in the film.

Synopsis[edit]

A journalist (Joseph Arkim) investigates the disappearance of his girlfriend and discovers she is one of a series of missing models. His search leads him to the villa of an eccentric photographer. There, the journalist meets a colorful group of houseguests and staff, and he discovers the photographer's greatest invention.

Production[edit]

The original title of the film during production was Il giardino delle lattughe ("The Lettuce Garden"). It was Helia Colombo's only film.

Release[edit]

The film was filmed in 1972 and released in 1975 in Italy. It was released on Blu-ray as part of Vinegar Syndrome's Forgotten Gialli: Volume One with an audio essay with film historian and critic Rachael Nisbet.[1]

Reception[edit]

Michael Tatlock of Cultsploitation wrote that the film "will disappoint many who are going in expecting an impressive Giallo."[2] Richie Pistilli of Italo Cinema would not recommend the film to newcomers to the genre but wrote that dedicated fans of Giallo films should see it.[3] Alex DiVincenzo of Broke Horror Fan wrote that "the picture fails to deliver on any of the pillars of the subgenre."[4]
