The RealReal

The RealReal is an online and brick-and-mortar marketplace for authenticated luxury consignment. The company was founded in 2011 by CEO Julie Wainwright. The RealReal is headquartered in San Francisco with retail stores in New York City and Los Angeles.[1] The company is a leader in luxury authentication and sustainability with a model based on the circular economy.

Company

The RealReal was founded in 2011 by Julie Wainwright, an e-commerce entrepreneur. By July 2018, The RealReal had raised $288 million in venture capital funding.[2]

In 2016, The RealReal joined the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Circular Economy 100 USA.[3] Also in 2016, The RealReal opened a pop-up shop in New York City. This was followed by the opening of the company’s first permanent retail store in New York City in 2017 and an additional pop-up in San Francisco.[4][5] A pop-up store in Las Vegas followed.[6] In 2018, The RealReal opened its second retail location in Los Angeles.[7][8]

In early 2019 The RealReal announced it would be adding an additional half-million square feet of e-commerce center space in Perth Amboy, New Jersey to its existing e-commerce centers in Secaucus, New Jersey and Brisbane, California.[9]

Sustainability

In 2017, The RealReal announced a sustainability partnership with luxury fashion brand Stella McCartney. The partnership launched in 2018 and was extended through 2019.[10][11][12]

Also in 2017, The RealReal established National Consignment Day as an official holiday.[13]

In 2018, The RealReal announced the launch of a custom sustainability calculator developed with environmental consulting firm Shift Advantage that quantifies the positive environmental impact of consignments processed by the company.[14][15]

Service

The RealReal sells and accepts consignments of men's, women's and kids' fashion, fine jewelry, watches, fine art and home decor. The company ships to over 60 countries. It employs an in-house staff of 110+ experts including horologists, gemologists, art curators and luxury fashion authenticators who inspect items for authenticity and value.[16][17]

In addition to its New York City and Los Angeles stores, the company operates Luxury Consignment Offices in Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, San Francisco and Washington D.C. where clients can consign and receive free valuations of their luxury goods.
