The Reporters' Collective
The Reporters' Collective (TRC) is a journalism collective started by Nitin Sethi and Kumar Sambhav Shrivastava in 2020.[1] They mainly investigate scams by people in power, for example the Paisa Politics[2] series on electoral bonds and Surveillance Nation[3], a three-part series on the Union government’s plans to track all its citizens.
The group has covered the COVID-19 pandemic in India extensively with its investigation into the Gujarat COVID-19 excess deaths[4] being discussed in the Gujarat Assembly. They've also written about the Union government using flawed data to counter the World Health Organization's death estimates.[5]
Notable articles
In a series published in Al-Jazeera on how Facebook gave a leg up to BJP where it proved that the ruling party benefitted due to the algorithm used by Facebook, The Morning Context said that the facts in the story were misrepresented,[6] and the algorithm follows volume something[7][clarification needed], that TRC didn't deal with. Sonia Gandhi, the then President of Indian National Congress, in March 2022 brought up TRC's Facebook-BJP series in the Lok Sabha,[8] and a Parliamentary Committee was set up to look into Facebook's politically motivated algorithm.[9]
Another story TRC was involved with involved the Union government, where they claimed that the Centre is making an Aadhaar necessary for Anganwadi child care schemes. The Press Information Bureau released a statement saying it isn't compulsory for children to have Aadhaar to avail of these schemes.[10]
