The Revere is the student-run biweekly foreign affairs newspaper of Phillips Academy, an American university-preparatory school located in Andover, Massachusetts. The paper's motto, "News from Every Quarter," is derived from Phillips Academy's Constitution that charges faculty to instruct "youth from every quarter," and likewise reflects The Revere's commitment to cover worldwide events from a wide range of political views and backgrounds.[1]
Founded in 2017 by Andrés Pérez and Jack Zinterhofer, the paper is financially and editorially independent of Phillips Academy. Since 2017, the paper has expanded its coverage, adding sections such as Cartoon, Illustration, and Regional Focus to supplement the main four sections: Politics, Economy, War and Conflict, and Opinion. Published print copies of the paper are available on campus in the Oliver Wendell Holmes Library and Paresky Commons, and digitally on the paper's website.
The paper is named after Paul Revere, who designed Phillips Academy's school seal.[2] The Revere strives to bring greater understanding to its readership, as did Paul Revere in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 1860 poem "Paul Revere's Ride."[3]
History and Mission[edit]
In The Revere's inaugural edition, published on May 11, 2017, founders Andrés Pérez and Jack Zinterhofer outlined the paper's mission in a letter to their readership:[4]
We hope our paper will help foster in our community a greater intellectual curiosity and knowledge in foreign affairs. At times this may mean you will disagree with us. We actually hope this is the case. But at the same time we also hope you will first read, learn, and then thoughtfully disagree. For us, this diversity of thought is at the core of our school’s and paper’s values.
Preserving diversity of thought remains the paper's guiding philosophy. The paper maintains a strict policy of remaining neutral in analysis articles and saving political commentary for opinion articles.
For example, in the Volume V No. 3 Special Edition 2020 Presidential Election issue, Editor-in-Chief Sophia Hlavaty and Publisher Lilly Yager affirmed the paper's position:[5]
During this deeply divisive period, we would like to reaffirm The Revere’s commitment to inviting an exchange of perspectives by publishing the voices of all students, regardless of political affiliation...To engage in conversation with opposing viewpoints, thus opening oneself to the possibility of new understanding, is vital in becoming a more knowledgeable citizenry. To report freely on issues of public interest is a founding principle of America’s democratic tradition that The Revere has and will continue to uphold.
Organization[edit]
Staff members are generally selected by the outgoing editorial board following an application process that occurs during late spring term. The new board's first paper is published during the fall term of the subsequent academic year. Today, the editor-in-chief and publisher serve as co-presidents of The Revere.
Content[edit]
The Revere combines analysis and opinion writing, illustrations, and photography in a biweekly paper that is eight pages or longer.
Regional Focus section[edit]
The Revere's Regional Focus section began under the leadership of the Volume IV board to feature the work by the senior writers. The Volume V board expanded the section to include writing from the section editors. Prior to the start of the academic year, each senior writer and section editor selects one region-based topic they are interested in following and analyzing throughout the year. For the three school terms, they each write one long form analysis piece, thereby forming a three-part series that explores their respective subject from multiple angles that range from examinations of history and culture to contemporary considerations of policy. Past examples of topics include Medical Politics and Healthcare in North America, the Rise of Populism, and the Legacy of Chinese Communism. Participation in the Regional Focus section is mandatory for senior writers and section editors, as the aim of the Regional Focus section is to train the paper's next leaders by cultivating the strong writing and critical thinking skills needed to produce exemplary evidence-based, forward-thinking research and journalism.
Special editions[edit]
At times, the editorial board opted to publish a special edition issue in lieu of the regular content. Past special editions include:
- Vol. V No. 3 (2020 Presidential Election)
- Vol. IV No. 6 (COVID-19 pandemic)
- Vol. IV No. 3 (Brexit)
