The Right To Shower
The Right To Shower is a social enterprise headquartered in Englewood Cliffs, NJ, USA, which sells responsibly-sourced personal care products. 100% of its first-year profits go towards converting trucks and buses into mobile shower units to provide people living on the streets with access to free showers.[1]
The project, supported by multiple U.S.-based partners and volunteers, is led in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Dallas, Oakland, Charlotte, and Brooklyn. The Right To Shower considers access to cleanliness to be a human right.[2] The social enterprise believes showers contribute to improving health and well-being, as well as restoring people’s dignity in their community.[3]
History
The Right To Shower was founded in 2019. Co-founders Laura Fruitman and Leandro Barreto aim for the brand to build awareness of homelessness within the U.S. while enabling consumers to help provide people with access to showers.[1]
The Right To Shower began functioning as a start-up within Unilever in 2019. Unilever sells beauty and personal care, home care, and foods and refreshment products in 190 countries, and reaches 2.5 billion consumers a day.[4] Co-founded by William Lever, his ambition for Unilever was “to make cleanliness commonplace; to foster health; that life may be more enjoyable and rewarding for the people who use our products”.[5]
Products
The first products launched in Whole Foods and Amazon in March 2019. They include head-to-toe cleansers in a bar soap and gel cleanser format, which can be used as a shampoo, body soap, shave gel, or face wash.
The company has an ethos of being fair, wholesome, and good for all—and so the products are sulfate, paraben, and alcohol-free, not tested on animals, 100% vegan and Vegan Action certified, and made from 100% recycled and recyclable materials.[6] The bottles and cartons are recyclable and the products are made with naturally derived cleaners.
Four fragrances are available—Dignity, Hope, Joy, and Strength.
