The River Lee is a 4 star hotel in Cork, a city in south-west Ireland. The hotel is located on a bend of the River Lee, with which it shares a name. As of July 2018, the hotel is owned by PV Doyle Hotels and is part of The Doyle Collection hotel group[1], having first opened in 1963 before being renovated in 2006.[2]
History[edit]
The hotel replaces the original Jurys Cork Hotel[3] which was built in 1963 by the Intercontinental Hotel Group and became a member of the Jurys Hotel Group in 1972. The hotel was a landmark in Cork and welcomed such famous guests as Michael Jackson[4].
Architecture[edit]
Built in 2006, the building features full height windows throughout, as well as a number of natural materials, such as slate, stone, marble and wood fuse.[5] The choice of materials was allegedly a reflection of the location, next to the River Lee, and the industrial heritage of the site that the property is located on. It was the terminus of the famous Muskerry tramlines that operated from the site from 1880 to 1920’s and acted as a key transport link between North Cork and the City. The slate in the lobby reflects the colour of the engine of the tram, and the lines on the floor leading to the bar are a nod to the train tracks, with the entrance ways to the bar reflecting the carriages. The artwork on the right hand side of the corridor was a commission awarded to Anita Groener, and again acknowledges the historical significance of the site.
A proportion of the tram track can be seen on the terrace as this was unearthed when the hotel was built in 2006. The hotel was designed by Henry J Lyons architects who won an architectural award for its design.
The art on each floor acknowledges famous characters in Cork life and includes Jack Lynch, Christy Ring, Frank O Connor, Sean O Riada and Michael Collins. The artist who provided the paintings was student of the year at the nearby Crawford School of Art. His name is Ray Murphy.
Location[edit]
The River Lee is located on western road in the centre of Cork city, in south-west Ireland.[6] The property was built on one of the bends in the River Lee, the river that flows past the hotel, of which it is also named after.[7] The building is approx. 10 minutes from Patrick St.
