"The Road Is Open Again" is song by Dick Powell and originates from the 1933 short film The Road Is Open Again. It was a propaganda song promoting the National Recovery Administration.
Analysis[edit]
- The "blue eagle" is a reference to the sign businesses would post outside of their establishments when participating in a voluntary program run by the National Recovery Administration to help improve the economy. When there is a blue eagle is on the White House, it is a sign that the current president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, is choosing to do his part to speed up the economic recovery, too.
- The stanza stating that there is a song in the air is a reference to itself. "The Road Is Open Again" is the note of repair.
- The mention of plowsman being happier is likely a reference to FDR's handling of the Dust Bowl, the Agricultural Adjustment Administration, and the Rural Electrification Administration.
References in other media[edit]
- Featured as the theme song of The Plot Against America, sung by actor of the show Michael Kostroff.[1]
