The Sandbox is a 3D user-generated gaming platform that is based on the Ethereum blockchain. The game uses voxel-style graphics. Users can exchange cryptocurrency for access to virtual plots of land and, can trade in-game items as non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The platform is owned by Animoca Brands, which purchased the rights to the original The Sandbox mobile game in 2018. The first Alpha event on the blockchain version of the platform was opened to the public in November 2021.

History[edit]

The original version of The Sandbox was developed by Pixowl (later, TSB Gaming) and released in May 2012 for iOS devices. A version for Android devices was released within the following year. It was a 2D open-world sandbox game, allowing users to interact with physical elements to create new items and structures.[1][2] Pixowl was acquired by Animoca Brands in August 2018.[3] Soon after the acquisition, developers of The Sandbox began to shift focus toward a 3D blockchain-based version of the game with voxel-style 3D graphics and the ability for users to create, buy, and sell in-game creations as NFTs.[4]

In May 2019, Animoca Brands raised $2.5 million in an investment round led by Hashed. The funding was designated for further development of The Sandbox platform.[5] Later in 2019, The Sandbox received an additional $2 million in funding from investors including Square Enix and True Global Ventures.[6] I In March 2020, Atari announced a deal with Animoca Brands to develop a "theme park" within The Sandbox virtual world.[2]

A beta version of The Sandbox Marketplace was launched in April 2021, allowing users to purchase in-game NFTs from 46 artists. At the time, The Sandbox had partnerships with brands like The Smurfs, CryptoKitties, and Shaun the Sheep.[7] Later in 2021, it announced partnerships with The Walking Dead[8] and rapper Snoop Dogg.[9]

The Sandbox Alpha launched on November 29, 2021.[10] Soon after the launch, entrepreneur Adrian Cheng announced that he would build land in the Sandbox metaverse.[11] By March 2022, The Sandbox had two million users and debuted the "Alpha Season 2" event, allowing broader access to gameplay experiences.[12] It also entered into partnerships to create virtual worlds in The Sandbox for Warner Music Group,[13] Gucci,[14] and Rabbids.[15]
