The Seahorse Trainer is a 2019 Canadian fantasy short film directed by Ricardo Bonisoli and Babak Bina, starring John R. Taylor. In 2019 the film had its Canadian premiere at the Spark Animation Festival and won the award for Best Visual Effects, along with receiving the Rising Star in Visual Effects accolade presented by the Visual Effects Society.[1][2] Most notably the film won one of three grand jury awards at the Seattle International Film Festival making the film an Oscar qualifier.[3][4]

The film was released in 2020 on Movistar+ and Amazon Prime.

Synopsis[edit]

Seamour is a lonely, old man with a unique passion for training seahorses. After a long day, he returns home to a decrepit dwelling to feed his seahorse team. Desperate to have his most prized seahorse perform a highly ambitious stunt, he begins a warm up routine to get the tiny creature ready. Today is the final day of training and Seamour must see the never before done 'Triple Back Flip' come to life. When the hourglass turns, the old man is interrupted by something from his troubled past and he must push his way through the disturbance in order to achieve what is about to be the greatest work of his entire existence.

Reception[edit]

The Seahorse Trainer had its world premiere at the Seattle International Film Festival in 2019 winning one of three grand jury awards. Since then, it has screened at 17 festivals in 6 different countries picking up 14 wins and 12 nominations in the process.

The Film was nominated for 8 Leo Awards in 2020 winning 5 of the nominations for Best Visual Effects, Best Editing, Best Production Design, Best Score and Best Sound Design in a short drama.[5]

The Seahorse Trainer further received Best Short Film awards at FilmQuest 2019[6], the New Jersey Film Festival 2020 [7] and the Vancouver Short Film Festival 2020[8].
