The Secret Princess is a 2016 feature animated family film written and directed by Segun Williams. The film was released on February 14, 2016 and stars Cuppy Otedola, Desmond Elliot, Robert H. Wainwright, and Sherrie Silver. The film is arguably Sub-Saharan Africa's first feature length computer generated animated family film outside of South Africa.


Set in traditional times where male children were considered more important than females, a king seeking an heir to his throne is obsessed with having a male child. Consequently his third wife (his two previous wives had six daughters between and were all sent away) switches her daughter with a poor farmers’ son in secret. The king unaware that the boy isn't his raises the child as Prince Akin who lives a life of prestige and luxury. While Sade the daughter who was switched to be with the farmer and his wife lives a life of a poor farmer’s daughter helping with the farm. When her father disappears and her mother is accused by the villagers of being a witch, both run off into the jungle for their lives. But they are not alone. Talking animals including the parrot who knew about the switch and spread the news, come together to help the mother and daughter who now live in a hut alone in the jungle hiding from those who might harm them. When Prince Akin finally meets Sade and they fall in love, the real challenge and adventure begins as they realize they will have to fight to be together.


The film was produced over a three years production period at TransTales Studio in London, United Kingdom. Production work was also carried out by freelance artists in Canada and Australia.Most of the voice over recording took place at TransTales studio in London, while Desmond Elliot's(A popular actor in Nigeria) voice over was recorded in Lagos Nigeria along with other extras. The film was created originally in 4K(Ultra High Definition) digital cinema standard.


The film premiered on 19 December at the 2015 Lagos Trans Animation Festival, where it was screened in the out of competition section.[2] On 21 March, It was screened at the 2016 KingstOOn International Animated Film Festival in Jamaica.[3] It was screened as the opening film of the 2016 Hollywood Weekly Film Festival.[4]The film received a limited release in cinema in Nigeria, and the United Kingdom before going on general release on Video on Demand and DVD worldwide.


When The Walt Disney Company announced it was making a movie on an African Princess Sade, the creator of Princess Sade movie The Secret Princess raised an intellectual property dispute which made Disney cancel their TradeMark application for Princess Sade
