The States Project

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The States Project is a nonpartisan political initiative dedicated to building power for U.S. state lawmakers who are committed to improving the lives of their constituents.[clarification needed] By leveraging district-level data and on-the-ground relationships in the states, The States Project’s electoral work focuses on the closest state legislative races where they believe their support can help shift or defend the balance of power in a state chamber.[clarification needed]

Daniel Squadron, a former New York State Senator, serves as Executive Director of The States Project, which he co-founded alongside Adam Pritzker in 2017.

Mission

The States Project works to help Americans understand the importance of state legislatures and how this level of government impacts every aspect of their lives. The States Project’s electoral work focuses on winning governing majorities in the states by making state legislative campaigns more effective and better-funded. Its flagship program, The States Project Giving Circles, works to mobilize communities around this work, to help build a healthy, sustainable, and prosperous future for all.

Track Record

In 2018, one year after The States Project was founded, The States Project raised and spent roughly $5 million to help shift power in the Maine and New Hampshire state legislatures. That same year, The States Project helped bring state Democrats closer to holding the majority in three other states.

As of 2021, The States Project has contributed $15 million to state legislative candidates and impacted the balance of power in 22 chambers across 15 states.

Programs

The States Project’s programs are designed to help everyday people impact this critical level of government.

The Giving Circles program empowers groups of friends, family, and community members to pool contributions in order to help shift or defend governing power in their target states.[1] Following the Supreme Court’s landmark decision to overturn the constitutionally protected right to an abortion, The States Project recruited hundreds of Giving Circles focused on building power for pro-choice state lawmakers.[2]

Give Smart leverages data to identify the state legislative races where small dollar donors can have the biggest impact at any given moment. Co-created by The States Project’s Director of Research, Aaron Kleinman, and Data For Progress, 100% of funds raised through Give Smart go directly to candidates in the closest races.

Partnerships

In 2022, The States Project partnered with Forward Majority[3] to invest $20 million[4] across 40 key state legislative races, with the goal of shifting power in at least one chamber in Arizona, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. The States Project announced another investment[5] with Arena[6] in those three states, aimed at helping state legislative campaigns fill critical staffing gaps.
