The Stone Woman [1] a novel by Tariq Ali and belongs to his Islam Quintet. Set in the year 1899 in Ottoman Turkey, the novel is about a rather unorthodox aristocrat family of Iskender Pasha. An ancient Greek statue found in the vicinity of the palace in which the family had been living for some generations, is referred to as "the Stone Woman". It is to this statue individuals belonging to different generations make confessions and reveal secrets. Thus "the Stone Woman" becomes a curiously important part of the story-telling and the novel is named after it.
