The Sylvee

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Sylvee is a 2,500-capacity live-music venue in downtown Madison, Wisconsin. Opened in September 2018, it is the flagship room of the family-owned promoter Frank Productions and has become the city’s primary mid-sized concert house, hosting national touring acts across rock, indie, hip-hop, electronic and comedy genres.[1][2]

History

Frank Productions, founded by Herb and Sylvia Frank after their 1964 move to Madison, spent five decades operating the 600-seat Barrymore Theatre before commissioning a larger purpose-built room to meet growing demand.[3] Ground-breaking for the Gebhardt Building development on East Washington Avenue began in 2016; the $50 million mixed-use project includes offices, retail and a 45,000 ft² performance space that would become The Sylvee.[4][5] The venue’s name honors matriarch Sylvia “Sylvee” Frank, who died during planning; family members collaborated with Madison firms Strang, Inc. (architecture) and Miron Construction to embed personal memorabilia and local art into the finish work.[6]

The room debuted 14 September 2018 with a sold-out show by The National, instantly establishing the 2,500-person capacity as Madison’s bridge between clubs (≈1,000 cap) and the university arena (≈17,000).[1][2]

Design & Layout

  • Main Hall: 2,500 general-admission, standing-room-only floor with a 60’ wide stage; 30’ trim height allows full 180° sight-lines from every angle.[7]
  • Balcony: tiered seating for 400 plus two communal bars.
  • VIP Suites: six glass-walled suites (12–24 guests each) overlooking stage left, available for individual or corporate buy-outs.[8]
  • Sound System: in-house d&b audiotechnik V-series line array; 96-channel digital desk.
  • Back-of-house: dual loading docks, four dressing rooms, green room with full kitchen, artist laundry and dedicated runner’s garage—amenities rare for a 2,500-capacity room.[7]
  • Sustainability: Gebhardt Building is LEED-Gold; venue diverts 75 % of tour waste through backstage composting and bottle-fill stations.[5]

Community Role

The Sylvee partners with local non-profits for quarterly “Sylvee Serves” benefit matinees and donates $1 per ticket on select shows to Girls Rock Camp and YWCA. Frank Productions also books emerging Wisconsin artists as openers, providing them full production on a professional stage—a pipeline credited with accelerating careers of bands such as Disq and Proud Parents. In 2023, the venue generated an estimated $24 million in ancillary downtown spending, according to Destination Madison.[2][7]
