The Transformation is a 1995 documentary film that serves as a follow up to the documentary film The Salt Mines, both directed by Carlos Aparicio and Susana Aikin.
The film includes language that reflected usage and attitudes of the time, particularly the word "transvestite" and "drag queen" in referring to the individuals depicted in the documentary. GLAAD publishes on their website that "Transgender women are not cross-dressers or drag queens. Drag queens are men, typically gay men, who dress like women for the purpose of entertainment. Be aware of the differences between transgender women, cross-dressers, and drag queens. Use the term preferred by the person. Do not use the word "transvestite" at all, unless someone specifically self-identifies that way."[1]
The film explores how its subjects deal with issues such as AIDS, identity, gender, sexuality, poverty, religion, race, culture, and homophobia.
