The UPenn Statesman (The Statesman) is an award-winning independent student newspaper at the University of Pennsylvania.
The publication goes to print about once a month when the university is in session. Additionally, the paper publishes articles to its website—upennstatesman.org. The UPenn Statesman is a registered student organization at the University of Pennsylvania, however it does not accept university funding. The paper is a member of the Collegiate Network, which includes publications such as The Dartmouth Review, The Stanford Review, and The Princeton Tory.[1]
The UPenn Statesman also brings various speakers to campus throughout the year.
History[edit]
The UPenn Statesman was founded at the University of Pennsylvania in 2013 as The Statesman. The publication was created to give a platform to conservative and libertarian voices on a left-leaning campus.[2] Originally, The Statesman was published several times a year in magazine format. It went out of print temporarily, but was brought back in newspaper format at the beginning of 2018.
In the summer of 2018, the group received nonprofit status to protect its financial and editorial independence from the university[3]. The publication changed its name to The UPenn Statesman in the fall of 2018.
