The Unividuals is an instagram based art project that first appeared on the social media platform on the 13th of December 2017.
Its Instagram profile page lists it as a community and the bio is written in the form of 'we' as well but it features just one character often depicted as multiple, separate characters in the same chapter. The character is an androgynous figure with long black hair, dressed in a long coat and instead of face it has a zigzag pattern where a face would traditionally be, one that is different every time. One page, so called, chapters are posted weekly, usually on a Monday, and depict various surreal scenes where the creator intends to evoke something from the reader or make a point that seems closely related to the creator's world view. At the moment the project has amassed a following of more than 11.000.
The Story[edit]
The project seems to revolve around a sense of separate unity and the concept of a finite universe where everything is one but playing different roles at different times and everyone and everything will eventually get a turn in playing every role.
This is the reason the character is depicted in scenes that transcend time. Some drawings are historic, some are biblical in context.
Whatever the case there's always a point of view to be conveyed by every chapter, as the one page illustrations are often referred to by the project itself.
Street art presence and Sticker art[edit]
Ever since the project has started, stickers, that were at first, aimed at promotion, have been a part of The Unividuals.
A street art campaign was launched seemingly simultaneously with the project.
Since then the main promotional sticker has evolved in appearance to what is now a minimalist rendering of the zigzag face of the main character.
In the last year and a half the sticker has been seen all over the world across four continents. Most notably in The Netherlands and America and most recently Sweden.
Unividuals has also taken part in sticker festivals throughout Europe like Slap! Exhibition (Tartu, Estonia), Sticker Con (Madrid, Spain), Stickma Festival (Madrid, Spain) and United Slap Society (Besançon, France).
Sticker art is an increasingly important element in the project, with more and more elaborate sticker originals surfacing.
Collaborations[edit]
Over the last period the project has begun to collaborate on sticker designs with other artists. One with the French street artist that goes by the moniker Propaganda Project and there are hints to more to come.
Unividuals have also contributed to the fast growing street art platform Levveunlevvelosse that work with the #Nohatefamily hashtag
as a sign of support of the philosophy of the project as so many artists have done over the last year.
Trades and philosophy[edit]
The Unividuals has a philosophy where it tries to have monetary gains play as small a part as possible when it comes to distributing prints of the weekly growing body of work that is showcased on the project's Instagram profile.
Instead of wanting money for prints of the work, trade propositions can be sent to the project's email address, as told by Ian Lindsay in a 2018 article.
Beyond trading prints of the actual series of drawings, sticker trades are an ongoing process for the project, trading stickers with the likes of Suffer Stickers, Stickermaid, Riles, Rata del Aire and Montross Zero.
