The Wilderness Diva is a documentary television series about the Swedish opera singer Carina Henriksson who is both indigenous Sámi and Meänkieli, which is part of the Swedish minority group from Meänmaa, the Torne Valley borderland between Sweden and Finland.[1]
The story deals with how Carina rediscovers and develops her cultural and linguistic heritage and is in Swedish as well as the Swedish minority languages Meänkieli, Sámi and Finnish. The documentary series was originally broadcast in three parts on Sveriges Television and on SVT Play during September and October 2023.[2]
The content centers on the conditions for creating and spreading culture in sparsely populated areas with an emphasis on Carina Henriksson in the Kiruna Municipality.[3] The central focus of the series is on the two major performances Ett norrländskt rekviem with music by Fredrik Sixten and Poetissan från Aareavaara about the infamous Korpela movement with music by Fredrik Österling.[4]
It is primarily shot in Norrbotten with Piteå and Studio Acusticum at the center but also in Västernorrland, Jämtland, Södermanland, Stockholm and the village of Godegård in Östergötland. The Wilderness Diva is produced by Freedom From Choice and Sveriges Television and created by the award-winning filmmaker Mattias Löw.[5]
