Plot Summary[edit]

Mma Ramotswe is encouraged by her team to take a sabbatical. This leaves Mma Makutsi in charge of The Ladies' No 1 Detective Agency. Mma Ramotswe is supposed to abstain from work but she finds it difficult to be out of action. She tries to prod her team members but they avoid divulging any details. She does not completely trust her deputy and at the first chance decides to secretly investigate a case. She is caught by Mma Makutsi and it leads to an embarrassing situation for her. Mma Makutsi later explains that she did not share the details of the case with Mma Ramotswe as she had stumbled upon an attempt to spread a baseless rumor against her friend Mma Potokwani's husband. At the end, Mma Ramotswe is assured that Mma Makutsi has her best interest at her heart and proceeds on a voluntary holiday.

In another case, a child has been entrusted by his prostitute mother to an aunt. However, the aunt is employing the child in illegal commerce. Mma Ramotswe not only rescues the child from the aunt but also reunites him with his mother whom he had assumed to be dead.

Mma Makutsi's arch nemesis - Violet Sephotho - has started a secretarial college in Gaborone that flouts immigration laws and is named similar to The Ladies' No 1 Detective Agency. Furious Mma Makutsi takes her head on and forces her to shut down the college.
