Some Scrapbook Memories Of A Theatre Vet!:
During the course of his 50-year-long career in The Performing Arts, Excaliber Shakespeare Company of Chicago Founder, Artistic Director, Producer, Los Angeles-based Theatre Artist and Joseph Jefferson Citation Award-winning actor Darryl Maximilian Robinson has been involved ( onstage and off ) in over 250 live theatre and literary arts presentations at multiple locations throughout the U. S.. He has also, as many folk in the entertainment industry do on those occasions when they seek to make ends meet, worked numerous "arts-related day gigs." This collection ( provided with the permission of all of its numerous photographers, and free-for-use by the general public as part of The Excaliber Shakespeare Company Los Angeles Archival Project ) is a reflection of both on and off stage experiences.
Darryl Maximilian Robinson has become noted as the very first black actor in American Theatre History to portray on stage a trio of classic dramatic roles including: Sir Thomas More in Robert Bolt's "A Man For All Seasons" ( in a 1984 revival presented by The University Players of The University of Missouri-St. Louis and directed by AEA Member John Grassilli at The Benton Hall Theater ); King Henry II in a 1992 multiracial cast revival of James Goldman's "The Lion In Winter" ( directed by Mr. Robinson for his chamber theatre Excaliber Productions, Ltd in St. Louis and staged at The Wabash Triangle Cafe ); and Andrew Wyke ( opposite the talented actor Sean Nix as Milo Tindle ) in a 2000, 30th Anniversary, all-black cast revival of Anthony Shaffer's "Sleuth" presented under Mr. Robinson's direction by his chamber theatre The Excaliber Shakespeare Company of Chicago at The Harrison Street Galleries Studio Theatre of Oak Park, Illinois.
Also of note is the fact that for a time, in 1983 ( just two years after winning the 1981 Fort Wayne News-Sentinel Reviewer's Recognition Award for Outstanding Thespian of the Season for a gallery of his stage roles, particularly for the part of Fagin in a revival of Lionel Bart's classic musical "Oliver!" at Enchanted Hills Playhouse of Syracuse, Indiana ), for the highly-regarded Urban Gateways arts and educational organization, Chicago-born and stage-trained actor and play director Darryl Maximilian Robinson toured to numerous public and private schools throughout the greater Chicagoland area playing the Caribbean Island-born, African-American, French and English speaking Frontiersman and Founder of The City of Chicago, Jean-Baptiste Pointe DuSable ( 1745-1818 ), in local playwright Alice Rubio's highly-effective, one-act historical drama "Chicago: A Tale of One City."
Darryl Maximilian Robinson has included not only production photos and copies of significant reviews of his work in The Theatre around the country in this collection, but also copies of numerous awards and nominations, including such honors as his 1997 Chicago Joseph Jefferson Citation Award, his 1997, 1999 and 2001 Chicago Black Theatre Alliance / Ira Aldridge Award nominations, his 1992 Greater St. Louis Area Harpooners of the Sea Unicorn Certificate of Honorary Membership Award, his 1981 Fort Wayne News-Sentinel Reviewer's Recognition Award, his 1998 Chicago WKKC Radio Critic's Corner Fine Arts Award and his 2015 / 2016 Los Angeles ELATE Season Ticket Holder Award nomination. Most recently, Darryl Maximilian Robinson received a 2019 BroadwayWorld Chicago Award nomination for Best Performer In A Musical or Revue ( Resident Non-Equity ) for his critically-praised performance of the dual roles of The Chairman Mr. William Cartwright of The Music Hall Royale and The Mayor Thomas Sapsea of Cloisterham, England in the 2018 Saint Sebastian Players of Chicago revival production of Rupert Holmes' The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Photos of his performance in that revival are included in this collection.
Darryl Maximilian Robinson has also included photos from his May 6, 2012 national television debut of his 22-second comedic cameo appearance as rap star Drake in Adult Swim's 'Loiter Squad' as part of this collection. Also featured are a series of pix of Darryl Maximilian Robinson as Mayor George Shinn in the 2022 revival production of Meredith Willson's 'The Music Man' at The Fremont Centre Theatre in South Pasadena CA. These fine photos were taken by the talented Photographer and Video Editor Eric Michael Hernandez. The wonderful costume design is by Tamarah Ashton.
On April 18, 2022 Darryl Maximilian Robinson made his fourth appearance on the internet performing arts television show 'The Actor's Choice' Episode 8.16 to discuss with veteran entertainment journalist and host Ron Brewington the many contributions of the late, great stage and screen legend Sir Sidney Poitier. Darryl Maximilian Robinson's entire visit to UBNGO Burbank Studio in Hollywood was photographed and videotaped by longtime friend and Excaliber Shakespeare Company Member JL Watt, some images of which are included with Mr. Robinson's numerous Theatre photos in this article. On May 9, 2022 Darryl Maximilian Robinson was named a winner of a 'Making The World Happening' Award for his numerous online theatre-related offerings at Allevents.in.
