Theo Rauch (born July 17, 1945) in Munich) is a graduate economist, holds a doctorate in economic and social geography (Dr. rer. nat.) and is an extracurricular Professor at the Center for Research on Developing Countries at the Geographical Institute of the FU Berlin. For many years he worked for the GTZ and other development aid organizations. As part of his development work, he dealt with the topic of regional economic development and rural structural change. As a “border crosser” between science and practice, his main concern is a development policy practice that is more strongly based on development theory and theory development that is influenced by practical experience.[1][2][3]

Profession and career[edit]

From 2001 to 2011 he worked as a freelance expert and lecturer on development policy, rural development, decentralization for GTZ, DED, Welthungerhilfe, de:Misereor and the Department for International Development (DFID) based in London. During these years he wrote the textbook Africa in the Process of Globalization (2008) and a practice-oriented textbook Development Policy – Theories, Strategies, Instruments (2009).[4]

Another central subject of his work were retrospective analyzes / "Lessons Learned" studies on Africa, development policy, development theories, rural development, smallholders under the motto "continuity and change". The study on the processes of change in the NW province of Zambia, which was written together with his wife Maria Tekülve on a review trip "25 years later" (2015), received particular attention in the professional world.[5]
