Thief: The Dark Project Remastered is an upcoming stealth action game developed by Nightdive Studios and Eidos-Montréal and published by Atari. It is a remaster of the 1998 video game Thief: The Dark Project, originally developed by Looking Glass Studios and published by Eidos Interactive.[1][2] The remaster includes content from the original game and the 1999 expanded release Thief Gold.[1][3]

The game was announced during the PC Gaming Show in June 2026. It is scheduled for release in winter 2026 for Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2.[4][5]

Gameplay

Thief: The Dark Project Remastered retains the first-person stealth gameplay of Thief: The Dark Project. The player controls Garrett, a master thief in a dark fantasy city, and is encouraged to avoid direct combat by using shadows, sound, movement, and equipment to bypass or distract enemies.[6][3] Garrett's equipment includes a blackjack, sword, lockpicks, mines, flashbombs, noisemaker arrows, moss arrows, fire arrows, and rope arrows.[1]

The remaster includes the missions and updates from Thief Gold, the expanded version of the original game released in 1999.[1][6] The game uses systems involving non-player characters, artificial intelligence, light, and sound to allow enemies to detect the player, investigate disturbances, and raise alarms.[1][6] Each mission has three difficulty settings with different objectives.[3]

The remaster also includes a mission selector, a weapon and item wheel, modern gamepad support, and support for custom campaigns on the PC version.[2][6]

Development and release

Thief: The Dark Project Remastered was announced by Atari, Nightdive Studios, and Eidos-Montréal during the PC Gaming Show in June 2026.[1][7] Nightdive developed the remaster using its KEX Engine, which the studio has used for other remasters of older video games.[1][2]

The remaster features updated textures, models, animations, cutscenes, and user interface elements.[1][6] It is planned to support up to 4K resolution and 120 frames per second, along with gamepad features such as rumble, motion control, and gyro support.[2][8] PC Gamer wrote that the reveal trailer appeared to preserve the visual identity of the original game while adapting it for modern displays.[7] GamesRadar+ similarly noted that the trailer showed smoother visuals while retaining the original game's retro style.[4]

The game is scheduled for release in winter 2026 for Windows through Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG.com, as well as PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2.[1][5]
